A new member of Philobiblon
Apologies for my absence all day, but I've been to Battersea Dogs' Home (twice! - long story) and the Philobiblon household has now grown by one. I promise not to turn this into a dog blog, but thought you'd like to meet Prince:
He's really more handsome than this photo indicates, but hasn't really got used to the camera, yet. Prince's an ex-racing greyhound, aged about five, who has spent the last two years already in a house (so he is housetrained - handily!)
He's a bit bigger than I would have ideally liked - he's having to wind himself around the house - but he came with rave recommendations from Battersea's greyhound specialist, and he does curl up into a rather neat ball - as he's just done, which suggests he's already feeling at home.
I'm not entirely sure about the name Prince; alternative nominations are welcome - a blog first - "Name the dog competition?" A guy on the train to Victoria said he was the colour of champagne, but maybe that's a bit too posh a name for an honest working dog. Then again, he does come from a long line of aristocrats - think of all those early modern and 18th and 19th century oils in which greyhounds feature.

Congratulations on your new household member, he is a very handsome guy. Greyhounds have such sweet souls and I know you will be very happy with him. One warning- greyhounds are notorious couch potatoes so be prepared to share yours.
Luckily I have a very small couch, so the ground rules are already set. I think the kitchen will be a bit more of a challenge - the experts say they tend to be terrible food thieves, so everything has to be kept well locked away. And he's tall enough to get his nose on the cupboard top, without even jumping ...
Congrats! He looks like a sweet boy.
If "Champagne" is to posh, how about "Sparkling Wine"? More working class, I think. *LOL*
Congratulations, Natalie! I'm so jealous, Jo and I can't have a dog in our flat.
I know Prince isn't the name you would have chosen, but surely it's better to give the guy a chance to get used to his new life without the added disruption of changing names too?
Chardonnay? Lambrusco? ;)
I don't think he knows his name is Prince, Antonia - he doesn't seem to react in any way - so I don't suppose he'll mind changing it.
Dogs don't care what you call them and are happy to adapt. My mum's got a scottie called Maggie that she loves far more than is sensible so I renamed her Maggot when I lived at home. There was a brief period when she forgot her proper name and would only come when you called Maggot...
Great-looking greyhound!
He's beautiful! Congratulations!
What a great looking dog - a real plus to the Bennett household. As for a new name here are some suggestions :-
My brother calls his dog Deefer (work it out), or
The dog formerly known as Prince (a bit of a mouthful and not really original I know), or
Philly (an Aussie diminution of your blog), or
Lucky (now he has a great home), or
Zippy (well he is a greyhound), or
you could just wait and see if his personality suggests a name, as larger dogs like greyhounds usually pack quite a personality.
Have fun.
He's lovely, so glad you took him into your home :)
