Some good news
They've cancelled the softball and baseball in the 2012 Olympics, so Regent's Park won't be ripped up for the purpose of building a huge temporary stadium. I withdraw some of my earlier cumudgeoning (although not all of it - the Games are still bound to cost a mint and cause lots of disruption).

It might be a good thing to scale down the games. But baseball and softball are world-wide amateur sports which promote excellent values and skills. They're being cancelled because professional leagues weren't contributing enough star power (a la Olympic Basketball, which is a joke and a half). How about cancelling something where the world children's championship isn't watched by a billion people?
Okay, hands up: I confess to a degree of Nimbyism here.
But while I know nothing about baseball, I spent many, many primary school hours being bored silly by softball, a watered-down, deskilled, dumbed-down version of baseball for the "girls" (just like netball v basketball) for which I can feel no sympathy whatsoever.
