Women can't win ...

... particularly female politicians. Julia Gilliard is vying for the leadership of the Australian Labour Party. But her kitchen looks too empty. That obviously rules her out then.

This story, while still dwelling on her single, childless condition, at least manages to say something about her politics.

If you need cheering up after that, check out this pleasant little essay in response to that inevitable question when a woman reaches a certain age: Are you pregnant yet?

A sample: "Is there any carbon-based life form who wouldn’t rather be relaxing in a café with a warm, spicy cup of tea than scraping pudding from the ceiling or having someone claim they’ve ruined their life?"

Julia Baird's book Media Tarts (Scribe, Melbourne, 2004) has an interesting section on the tendency to photograph female politicians in their kitchens. Carmen Lawrence was photographed in a kitchen, as was Cheryl Kernot, and a list of others---I don't have the book with me.

As it so happens I've seen inside the kitchens of more than a few politicians and politicians' staffers: they're almost all unused and clean like that one. Most of them eat terrible diets of takeaway and fast food, and work ridiculously late.

Thanks for the reference; I'll look it up when I'm next in Oz. But the conclusion abotu kitchen photos doesn't surprise me. They'll probably start "correcting" her wardrobe next.
